The streets of Anquing, a city located 1,200 kilometers south of Beijing in Anhui province, were the scene of a dramatic attack on Saturday afternoon.

A man armed with a knife killed five people and injured 15 others in the eastern Chinese locality, according to state television CCTV.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the attack that took place on a pedestrian and shopping street, the Anqing Public Security Bureau said in a statement posted on the Weibo social network.

Prohibition on carrying a firearm

Knife attacks are not uncommon in China, where carrying a gun is not allowed for ordinary citizens.

They are regularly carried out blindly by people who consider themselves victims of injustice and want revenge on society.

In April, a man with a knife killed two children and injured 16 others at a nursery school in southern China.

In 2018, a man who stabbed nine children to death in the north of the country was sentenced to death.
