Ten activists from the NGO Greenpeace have been arrested at 10.30 am today after climbing the Cibeles fountain, in front of Madrid City Hall, and climbing several street lamps during a protest against pollution on World Environment Day. Those arrested have walked through the water and have climbed to the top of the statue to place an anti-pollution mask on the goddess that was symbolically connected to a transparent capsule with a natural tree placed in a transparent urn. They wanted to recall the need to increase the area of urban green spaces that protect people's health and mitigate the risks of the environmental crisis facing the planet. The environmentalists are

accused of alleged crimes of public disorder, resistance and disobedience.

This group of activists has entered the fountain around seven thirty in the morning of this Saturday and they have not been evicted until ten thirty, according to these same sources.

Eight of the activists, wearing wetsuits, climbed onto the statue of Cibeles,

The other two detainees climbed the streetlights to unfurl a 50-square-meter banner with the slogan 'Green cities, a healthy planet', coinciding on

Saturday with the celebration of World Environment Day.

"

Cities are currently home to 55% of the world's population,

but they generate 70% of global emissions and consume two-thirds of the planet's resources and energy. That is why cities are essential to curb the climate emergency and the loss of biodiversity, "according to a Greenpeace statement.

According to this organization, it is "urgent" to reinvent cities for people and

not to exceed global warming of 1.5 ° C compared to the industrial era, an

objective set out in the Paris Agreement, which requires transforming mobility, food, public and green spaces, energy consumption and energy efficiency, waste generation and consumerism.

"This World Environment Day, mayors and mayors must be recognized as key figures to generate the change we need. We are seeing some steps taken, but we need much more ambition, and put people and the environment in the center, to achieve green cities and a healthy planet. As the mayor of Madrid himself has recognized, criticism helps to evolve, and we hope that this activity will encourage them to act, "Alba García, head of the Cities campaign, told Servimedia Greenpeace Sustainable.
