Estonian Ott Tänak (Hyundai) leads the Rally Sardinia, 5th round of the World Rally Championship (WRC), Friday evening at the end of the first day, with 19 seconds ahead of Dani Sordo (Hyundai) and 36 on Sébastien Ogier (Toyota).

Tänak, 4th in the world championship, was better placed on the road all day and posted the first five scratch times of the day.

Then Sordo took over from SS6 to SS8, but tied with his teammate Thierry Neuville in the last of the day, dominated like the others by Hyundai.

"It was a very good day, we can be happy with this third place tonight," said Ogier, the seven-time world champion.

A three-time winner in Sardinia, he coped well with the handicap of sweeping more dust than his rivals by going first on the road, as the leader of the championship.
