- The exclusion from Ecowas applies immediately, until the deadline expires at the end of February 2022, when they will hand over power to a democratically elected government, says Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey after the meeting.

In August last year, Colonel Assimi Goita led a military coup that overthrew Mali's then government.

He became vice-president of the new government that would rule in anticipation of next year's elections, but a week ago he led a new military coup that detained interim President Ba N'Daou and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane.

A constitutional court has since appointed Assimi Goita Mali's new president.

Ba N'Daou and Moctar Ouane have been released but have been stripped of their posts.

The 14 other West African countries that make up Ecowas demand in a joint statement that a new civilian prime minister be appointed immediately in Mali and that a coalition government be formed.
