• Criticized for its location and its capacity deemed insufficient, the CHU project was reviewed.

  • Management indicates that it is renouncing the elimination of some 200 beds, and that the Laënnec site, in Saint-Herblain, will ultimately house some of them.

Ultimately, there will be no bed closures.

After several years of criticism about the project for a new CHU on the island of Nantes (about the site chosen but especially the capacity issue), the management of the establishment has revised its copy.

In a press release sent on Friday, she said she had taken "several concrete measures" as part of "the reflection on the aging of the population of the department".

Main announcement: “192 beds will be kept compared to the initial objective”.

While the new hospital provided for 1,380, or at least 200 less than currently, the CHU finally decided to maintain the workforce with the aim of creating a consultation platform for the elderly.

Another announcement, and not the least: part of this service will be located on the Laënnec site (140 beds) in Saint-Herblain, which was yet to close its doors completely and be sold in the initial project.

The remaining 52 beds will be fitted out in the new Ile de Nantes hospital, the press release said.

"Very good news for the public hospital service"

If no information about a potential increase in the number of staff positions has yet been given, the CHU is looking to 2030. The management already plans "the creation of a hundred beds and places of care immediately on the Nantes conurbation ”.

"Very good news for the public hospital service, for the Nantes metropolis and beyond for the whole region", greets Johanna Rolland, the mayor of Nantes and president of Nantes metropolis, who recalls that she had alerted the Minister of Health on this issue of the number of beds, during the health crisis.

While the site has already started with earthworks near the Trois-Continents bridge, construction of the building as such (which is due to open in 2026) will start soon, the hospital also announces.
