Concretely, London and Brussels suspect the social network of having used advertising data collected from advertisers on its platforms in order to compete with them in their own markets.

This would constitute an abuse of a dominant position.

The European Union is specifically investigating the online ad service “Facebook Marketplace”, where people buy and sell goods.

The United Kingdom is also targeting the online dating application “Dating” for its survey.

The advertising market is huge: almost 3 billion people use Facebook every month and around 7 million businesses advertise their services there.

For its part, the American group undertakes to cooperate with the investigations in order to demonstrate that the accusations made are unfounded.

American internet giants are often accused in Europe and the United States of abuse of dominance.

Google, for example, has been fined by the European Commission amounting to more than 8 billion euros.
