Ukrainian ambassador to Thailand found dead on a tourist island

The Ukrainian ambassador to Thailand was found dead on Sunday on the tourist island of Koh Lipe (south), where he was vacationing with his son, police announced, while the causes of his death have not yet been determined.

Andrey Peshta, 45, was appointed as Ukraine's ambassador to Thailand in 2016.

And Thai police announced Sunday that he was found dead in his room in a hotel complex on Koh Lipe, a tourist island frequented by tourists because of its clear blue waters.

"The initial investigation did not reveal any evidence of an attack, a raid or violence," said a statement attributed to deputy national police spokesman Kisana Vathancharoen.

Members of the medical team who first arrived at the scene wore protective clothing to examine the body as a precaution, while the authorities questioned Ambassador Ostap's son, who was staying with him in the same room.

He said that his father went to sleep around 23.00 pm the previous day, but woke up around 4.30 am vomiting before passing out, according to Vathancharoen, who added that other witnesses were also questioned.

Andrei Pechta's body was first taken to a local hospital for an autopsy before being taken to a police hospital in the Thai capital, Bangkok, for a more in-depth investigation into the causes of death.

Pechta spent more than a decade of his career in Thailand, arriving in 2007 as an advisor to the diplomatic mission in Bangkok, according to the embassy's website.

He was appointed Deputy Director General of the Embassy in 2011 before taking up the post of ambassador in 2016.
