The EU has imposed heavy sanctions on Belarus since the regime last Sunday forced a passenger plane down in Minsk and arrested young journalist and regime critic Roman Protasevich.

But perhaps the sharpest criticism of Lukashenko's harsh rule has come from Lithuania, where many of Belarus's opposition members have taken refuge to continue the fight for democracy.

One of them is Svetlana Tichanovskaya, the leader of the opposition in Belarus.

The question now is whether their safety can be guaranteed.
