The news made the headlines of the English tabloids and Downing Street confirmed it Sunday, May 30: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday married his fiancée, Carrie Symonds, in what the press described as a "secret ceremony".

The Mail on Sunday and The Sun newspapers claimed on Saturday that Boris Johnson, 56, known for his eventful love life, had just married Carrie Symonds, 33, in Westminster Catholic Cathedral, in front of close friends and relatives.

"The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds tied the knot yesterday afternoon in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral," a Downing Street spokesperson confirmed on Sunday, adding that "the couple will celebrate their wedding with their family and his friends next summer ".

He was the second British Prime Minister to marry during his tenure, the first being Robert Jenkinson in 1822.

Married for the third time

The couple had been waiting for months to unite after their initial wedding plans last year were delayed by the pandemic.

Engaged in December 2019, the newlyweds are also the parents of a one-year-old boy, Wilfred.

According to the Mail on Sunday, around 30 guests attended the service - the maximum currently allowed - in central London, after being invited at the last minute.

“Congratulations to the Prime Minister and Carrie Symonds for their union,” greeted Sunday on Sky News the secretary of state in charge of the vaccination campaign, Nadhim Zahawi, who was not on the party.

The wedding was celebrated by the priest who baptized the couple's son and Wilfred was also present, according to The Sun.

Boris Johnson has been married twice previously.

He had four children with his previous wife, lawyer Marina Wheeler, before they separated in 2018. He is also believed to have a daughter born from an affair.

When he was elected in 2019, he became the first head of government to live in Downing Street as an unmarried couple.

Carrie Symonds, a former Conservative Party communications official, gave birth to their son weeks after Boris Johnson left intensive care while recovering from a severe case of Covid-19.
