May 30, 2021A French citizen detained in Iran since May 2020, Benjamin Brière, will be tried for espionage and "propaganda against the political system" of the Islamic Republic, his lawyer announced to the AFP.

In Iran, espionage is punishable by the death penalty, while the second charge, that of "propaganda against the system", foresees between three months and a year in prison. Brière, who is 36, will be tried by the revolutionary tribunal.

He is accused of spying for some photographs he allegedly took "in prohibited areas" thanks to a drone that he would have flown in a natural park, his lawyer said. According to his sister, he was arrested while in Iran for a tourist trip, which began in 2018.
