The Kamloops Indian Residential School was built in 1890 and was part of the now abolished school system in Canada.

The school system, which was based on forcing children to separate from their families, consisted of over 100 religious schools.

In 1996, the last school was closed and thus the old school system in the country was also abolished.

An estimated 150,000 children have been admitted to boarding schools against their will.

According to a report published in 2015, there was physical and sexual abuse at school, combined with consistent denial of children's own cultures and languages, writes Reuters.

"This is a painful reminder of our dark and guilt-ridden chapters in our history," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following the findings.

Tk'emlups te Secwepemc will now, together with forensic doctors, investigate the mass grave further in an attempt to find out more about what happened to the children.

A full report on the discovery will be published in a month.
