Pfizer / Biontech's vaccine was approved by the European Medicines Agency EMA on Friday for the age group 12-15.

This after the presentation of a study where 1131 children received vaccines and 1129 received placebo.

EMA assesses that the positive outweighs the negative, but the Swedish Pediatric Association does not agree.

Instead, they believe that the risks are still greater than the potential benefits.

Researchers: Difficult to stop pandemics without vaccination of young people

Matti Sällberg, vaccine researcher and professor at Karolinska Institutet, believes that it will be difficult to stop the pandemic if you do not vaccinate younger people.

The EMA has decided that the vaccine may be used, but it is up to the Member States to decide when and how.

Germany has already begun planning for implementation.

The Swedish Public Health Agency has not yet made any recommendations regarding vaccination of children.

According to Sören Andersson, unit manager at FHM, the authority is preparing documentation.

FHM: Can give recommendations this summer

Sören Andersson believes that there are many aspects that must be included in the decision.

If the spread of infection decreases after extensive vaccination of adults, there may be no need to vaccinate children.

- We know that the vaccine is good and seems to work on children, but you should not vaccinate unnecessarily, he says to Aktuellt.

What are you worried about that makes you want to wait with the recommendation?

- We are not worried, we want to make sure we have a good basis for our decision.

We expect to be able to give recommendations as soon as possible.

What does right mean so soon?

- This summer.

If it becomes relevant to vaccinate children against covid-19, the work could start in September, according to the unit manager.
