Congo (Kinshasa) Volcano Fears Another Evacuation of 400,000 People: Walking with Mattresses

Overseas Network, May 29. According to a report by CNN, on the 28th local time, a spokesperson for North Kivu in the northeastern part of the Congo (DRC) said that Goma, the capital of the province, was threatened by another eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano. About 400,000 people have been evacuated.

UNICEF said that among the 400,000 people, nearly 280,000 children were evacuated by foot, with mattresses and cooking utensils along the way.

A spokesman for the DRC government said that according to radar maps, the Nyiragongo crater is continuing to expand, and the local volcano observatory also reported that underground magma is continuously expanding. It does not rule out magma eruptions on the ground and on the lake.

On the 22nd, the Nyiragongo volcano erupted for the first time, killing at least 31 people. Since then, the surrounding area has experienced a series of earthquakes, and some areas 100 kilometers away also felt tremors.

There were also road cracks and wall cracks in Goma, causing 80,000 families to flee.
