• An online consultation made it possible to collect the opinions of Montpellier residents on the future of the Comédie, in order to consider the vast facelift desired by the mayor.

  • Among the first proposals retained, the creation of a shaded promenade, with trees, a long bench and the installation of a new, less slippery ground.

  • Residents can give their opinion on these proposals until July 11.

For the first time since its pedestrianization, in 1986, the Place de la Comédie, in Montpellier (Hérault), will be reinvented. This vast facelift, desired by the mayor, Michaël Delafosse (PS), was initiated by an online consultation, through which the inhabitants raised their grievances, and gave their opinions on the future of the former place of the 'Egg.

While many contributors have expressed "their attachment to their place," says town planner Jean-Pierre Charbonneau, who has studied the 450 or so messages sent, "criticism is sometimes severe," he continues.

Slippery floors, the influence of terraces, the summer furnace… They want water, greenery, calm, meeting places.

"And this consultation has revealed" conflicts ", in particular between those who like the place when it is lively, and others who find it too lively.

Trees

Among the proposals retained by the town hall, the creation of a shaded promenade, by planting elms, the historic tree of the city, along the tram line. When planted, these trees, whose roots will be placed in an earthen pit, in the basement, will be 8 meters high. And 15 meters at their adult height. Trees will also be planted on both sides of the Opéra Comédie, "without masking the facades, but, on the contrary, highlighting them", specifies the landscape designer Henri Bava, who is working on this revegetation, which was to begin in 2022. A garden, crossed by a long bench, and a fountain, will be created. This revegetation and this "cooling" of the square are a "response to climate change", underlines the mayor.

Finally, the other major project, it will be the change of the slabs of the Place de la Comédie, in light granite, "less slippery than limestone and which has better resistance to shocks", explains the city.

However, test boards will be on display this summer, before the start of work, so that residents can give their opinion.

The objective of this giant transformation, confides Michaël Delafosse, is to remake the Comedy, which had lost its former glory, "a place of rendezvous, of meetings", where "we make the Egg. , as the ancients used to say ”.

Until July 11, residents can still give their opinion on the first ideas retained by the consultation.

Before a new public meeting in the fall.
