During the opening of the session of the emergency meeting of the Council - at the request of Pakistan and Palestine - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said that the Israeli strikes against Gaza, killing civilians and targeting civilian installations in the Strip may amount to a war crime.

Bachelet added that Israeli civilians benefit from Iron Dome, while the Palestinians in Gaza have no protection.

Bachelet urged the Israeli authorities to immediately stop the deportations in Sheikh Jarrah and other neighborhoods, stressing that Israel is obligated - under international law - to protect the residents of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.

It said there was no evidence that armed groups used civilian buildings that Israel bombed in Gaza.

As for Israel's representative to the Human Rights Council, Merav Elon Shahar, she said that the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) used schools and hospitals to launch rockets at Israel.

Hastings said the ceasefire remained fragile, and that the coming days and weeks would be crucial to avoid a return to conflict.
