In Chile, the Jesuit congregation is trying to clean up its ranks.
To do this, it highlights in a report the crimes committed by some of its members.
In it, the Jesuits recognize that 64 people were victims of sexual abuse committed by his religious.
The congregation also assures to have provided the elements collected at the disposal of justice.
Of the eleven Jesuit priests involved, nine are responsible for “abusive situations with a sexual connotation” out of 34 minor victims, according to this 2021 report from the Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Reparations (CPR) of the Society of Jesus.
Five of these priests have died, three are no longer part of the Jesuit order and three others "are currently subject to strict professional supervision plans" involving psychological monitoring and the prohibition to approach minors, assures the religious congregation.
The report also indicates that 31 of the victims were financially compensated.
Apologies from the congregation
Among the Jesuits incriminated is the former head of the congregation, Renato Poblete, who, according to this report, has sexually abused four minors and 19 adults since 1960 and for more than four decades.
A first complaint against him was received in 2019, after which the congregation apologized to the victims.
Renato Poblete, who died in 2010, had been chaplain for more than 20 years at Hogar de Cristo, the largest foundation helping the poor in the country.
The Chilean Church has also been the subject of several accusations of abuse since the influential priest Fernando Karadima was denounced in 2010. A year later, he was found guilty by the Vatican of sexual abuse of minors.
