• Covid Health will lay off 4,000 health workers hired by the pandemic as of June 1

  • Health Workforce saves the Covid vaccination campaign, Primary Care, Mental Health and Emergencies from the reduction of Covid contracts

For unions and official schools, we are facing the

dismissal of more than 3,200 health professionals

when the coronavirus crisis has not even ended. For the Valencian Government, what is on the table is the

renewal of more than 6,000 Covid reinforcement contracts

for this whole year. They are the two opposing readings of a reality: the non-renewal as of June 1 of almost a third of the contracts that were made last year to face the pandemic in Valencian healthcare.

The Minister of Health,

Ana Barceló

, signed this Tuesday the resolution that will allow a total of 6,050 toilets to continue in their job until December 31.

Sources of the Department of Health clarified that, therefore, it will be communicated between Wednesday and Thursday who are affected.

"The health departments will personally contact both the professionals who extend their contracts and those who do not," these sources have stated.

They thus responded to the criticism of the Official College of Nursing of Valencia, which denounced this Monday that there were professionals who were receiving notification of the dismissal

via WhatsApp and SMS

, an extreme that has been denied by Health.

However, the announcement that, in practice, 3,259 contracts will be canceled - out of a total of 9,309 - has caused

great discomfort among the different health groups

, since the layoffs affect all profiles and all health departments.

The CSIF union has already warned of the "serious deterioration" that this will entail.

Not surprisingly, the layoffs will come in the process of vaccination, with the waiting lists soaring and when the primary care centers had just begun to recover the face-to-face care that was suppressed during the pandemic due to lack of resources.

Not to mention the need to take vacation shifts shortly.

Hence the union demand to

extend all contracts

.

On the contrary, from Health it has been insisted that the contracts that are renewed suppose a significant cost for the public coffers of the Generalitat, with a disbursement until December of 140 million euros. As Barceló herself explained, it is not so much a staff cut as an adaptation of the Covid contracts "to the new epidemiological situation."

For this, several

criteria

have been followed

when prioritizing some contracts over others. In the words of the general director of Human Resources, Carmen López, these "include the empowerment in primary care to face the vaccination against the coronavirus, the development of the mental health strategy in the Valencian Community and the reinforcement of the services of urgency". In addition, the official version is that it is intended to maintain "an important contingent" in hospital care.

But, for example, according to the figures provided by the unions, in the

General Hospital of Alicante

it will go from 979 to 535 Covid contracts, which will mean a decrease in nurses in the hospital unit from 258 to 140. At the

Hospital La Fe in Valencia

, the cut will mean going from 853 toilets for Covid reinforcement to only 505. In the

Alicante Sant Joan

health department

it will go from 409 to 267 reinforcement contracts, while the

La Plana

health department

will see its workforce decreased from 391 to 255.

The

Xàtiva-Ontinyent

health department

will keep practically half of those hired: 258 out of 442.

La Ribera

drops from 408 to 260 and

Sagunto

goes from 428 to 262.
