In 2019, Inès Madani was sentenced to 30 years in prison for trying to blow up a car near Notre-Dame.

She then appealed against her conviction.

The new trial opens Tuesday through June 7.

Jihadist Inès Madani, convicted of trying to blow up a car near Notre-Dame in September 2016, is retried on appeal from Tuesday before the special assize court in Paris, during a trial scheduled to last until to June 7.

At first instance, in October 2019, eight people were sentenced to terms ranging from 3 years in prison to life imprisonment.

The young woman, now 24, had been sentenced to 30 years in prison, and risks life imprisonment.

At the time of the facts, Inès Madani was 19 years old.

She is considered by the prosecution as "a face of female jihad", "mentor" to other female jihadists.

A few months before the carboy trial, she was also sentenced for the first time for having incited jihad candidates to leave for Syria or Iraq.

A first "totally excessive" conviction for the defense

By pretending to be a man who had gone to jihad, Inès Madani seduced women and recruited them.

One of them fell in love with this virtual man, and it was together that they organized the attack on Notre-Dame, Inès Madani then playing the sister of the false jihadist.

Both were guided by Rachid Kassim, French Daesh propagandist presumed dead in 2017. Except that they did not choose the right fuel to set fire to the gas cylinders, which did not explode that day.

A "carnage" was avoided, according to the examining magistrates.

Inès Madani has appealed against her conviction to 30 years of criminal imprisonment. His lawyer had deemed this sentence "totally excessive" and "made for the public". His accomplice is serving a 25-year sentence. Only a man accused of not denouncing a terrorist crime will also appear in this appeal trial.
