According to a British study, as many as 40 percent of healthcare professionals who have worked with severely ill covid19 patients may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

- That figure is certainly true for Sweden as well.

The British study was a bit old so there are probably even more now, says Emily Holmes, professor of psychology at Uppsala University and responsible for the study.

By comparison, the proportion of war veterans with PTSD is about 10 percent.

- Healthcare professionals are used to patients dying, but not working daily with seriously ill and dying people in this way.

The study is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University.

The treatment differs from conventional treatment of PTSD in that you do not go to a therapist.

Instead, you do digital exercises via your mobile and report the number of intrusive memories in a digital diary.

The results of the study are expected to be reported this autumn.

Watch Emily Holmes tell us more about intrusive memories and what the study is about in the clip above.
