The announcement comes in a press release that Dagens industri was the first to report on.

The company describes that it has "reluctantly made the decision to withdraw from the Swedish market after having been successful in Sweden for more than 45 years."

The reason given is the Swedish Tax Agency's VAT claim of over a quarter of a billion, which SVT reported on in January.

In the decision, the Swedish Tax Agency points out Brighstar as participating in the big mobile scam with suspected VAT fraud for billions, which SVT has examined since last autumn.

"The Swedish Tax Agency's investigation shows that you took an active, or at least deliberately passive, part in the fraud / scheme," it was said.

After SVT revealed the content of the decision, several of Brighstar's Swedish partners chose to demand explanations, and some even stopped their collaborations.

In March, Brighstar announced that it had started its own investigation and shut down an employee due to the information.

Do not trust Swedish courts

Brighstar has always opposed both the VAT claim and the accusations, and has explained in court submissions how the VAT payment would entail "serious consequences for the company and the group".

The company has appealed the Swedish Tax Agency's decision and has tried to postpone the payment of the VAT debt until the legal process is completed - but got the nod from the courts.

"Through these measures, the Group's international operations will not be affected by developments in Sweden," the press release states.

Brighstar Corps CEO Rod Millar says in the same press release that they see no alternative to liquidation "after the Swedish authorities' discriminatory treatment of Brightstar."

"We feel that we can not do business in Sweden as we do not have confidence in fair treatment from authorities and courts, despite our successes in the country for almost half a century."

SVT's review shows that Brighstar has had extensive business with several of the smaller, Swedish-owned companies in the mobile business.

Brightstar employees were also heard as witnesses in the large trial in Växjö, where several people were recently sentenced to long prison terms after the first trial around the mobile looting.
