"It is completely unacceptable to force an airplane en route from Athens to Vilnius to land in Minsk ... Any violation of international air transport rules must entail consequences," von der Leyen wrote on her Twitter account.

The head of the EC also said that all passengers of the plane should be able to fly to Vilnius.

Earlier, a Ryanair plane on a flight from Athens to Vilnius urgently landed in Minsk.

The founder of the NEXTA Telegram channel recognized as extremist in Belarus, Roman Protasevich, was flying in this airliner, who was detained after landing.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has already appealed to the Belarusian authorities with a demand to release Protasevich.
