Florent Manaudou, who aims to win back Olympic gold in the 50m in two months at the Tokyo Games, only took fifth place at the European Championships, in 21 sec 81, Sunday in Budapest.

Manaudou (30), 2012 Olympic champion and Olympic vice-champion of the discipline in 2016, lived in the Hungarian capital his first international long-course championship since his return to swimming in spring 2019, after two and a half years of break.

It was the Finn Ari-Pekka Liukkonen who won, in 21 sec 61, ahead of the Briton Benjamin Proud (21.69) and the Greek Kristian Golomeev (21.73).
