At least
eight people have died
and
two children are in critical condition after
a
cable car
collapsed
in the surroundings of the town of
Stresa
, in northern
Italy
and near the border with Switzerland, according to sources from Emergency services to Italian media.
The cable car covered the
route from Lake Maggiore to Mottarone mountain
when, for reasons that are being investigated, the cable that supported it broke 300 meters from the arrival station, in the highest part of the route, where it reaches the 1,400 meters above sea level.
According to the Italian media
Il Messaggero,
there were eleven people on board the cable car and the two children were transferred to a center in Turin.
The status of the last occupant is unknown.
Walter Milan, spokesman for the rescue services, said: "The provisional balance is eight dead and two injured, taken as an absolute emergency to the Regina Margherita pediatric hospital in Turin."
