23 May 2021 The tragedy on Mottarone, where the detachment of the cable car caused at least 12 deaths, immediately recalled the Cermis massacre of 3 February 1998 when near Cavalese, a ski resort in the Dolomites 40 km north-east of Trento, in Val di Fiemme, a US Marine Corps plane, took off from the Aviano base, flying at a much lower altitude than allowed and in violation of the regulations, cut the cable of the cable car, causing the cabin to fall from a height of about 150 meters and causing the death of the twenty occupants: the driver and 19 passengers of various nationalities.

But years earlier, on March 9, 1976, Cermis had always been in the news due to a much more serious accident: a cable car came off the steel cable that supported it crashing to the ground. 42 of the 43 people on board died (21 tourists from Hamburg, 11 Italians, 7 Austrians, a Frenchman, the operator and some plant workers).

Cermis aside, in the last 20 years, at least in Italy, cable cars or funiculars have recorded accidents, fortunately without victims.

On 12 July 2001, the cable car on Mottarone was also the protagonist of an accident that ended with a happy ending for 40 foreign tourists who were stuck in the cabin at a height of 25 meters due to a sudden jolt and overlapping of the ropes perhaps caused by the wind or a blackout of electric energy.

On January 1, 2004, about 70 skiers were suspended in the air due to a breakdown in the lift system of the "Magnolta" cable car in Aprica, in the province of Sondrio. Activating an emergency engine allowed the group to return to base safely.

On 23 April 2006, a landslide in the San Vigilio di Marebbe area caused the demolition of the cableway of the "Cianross" downhill slope, a new ski lift designed using the automatic coupling method. The cable car with single cabins was completely destroyed. Around the top station, located at an altitude of 1,310 meters, initially several cracks had formed which with the passing of the hours had widened causing a landslide of about 50,000 cubic meters which first caused the entire station to sink, then slide towards the valley. (including concrete foundations). The first pylon of the plant was damaged as the ropes fell to the ground.

On 22 March 2008 an accident in Sestriere with 18 injured. A cabin of the "Pattemouche" cable car that goes from Pragelato to Sestriere, on arrival at the "Anfiteatro" station in Sestriere, instead of stopping, continued its run going to hit the station itself. There were 30 people on board.

On November 27, 2010 there were moments of panic for travelers who were on the cable car that goes from Bormio 2000 to Bormio 3 thousand. The lift suffered a sudden stop, causing several people to fall violently to the ground, some of whom suffered bruises.

Finally, on 24 December 2016, 130 people were stranded in the cabins of the Plan maison / Cime Bianchi Laghi cable car in Val d'Aosta. The plant had stopped due to the strong wind.
