On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported 4,529 new deaths in the last 24 hours and over 250,000 new infections.

Recently, the infection has escalated shockingly for the country, which is now in its second wave.

At the beginning of May, MSB therefore announced that Sweden will contribute 200 oxygen concentrators.

The spread of infection has long been high in the big cities, but there are signs of improvement.

Instead, it has now taken off into the countryside.

Through the interpreter Shagufta Bhaldar, SVT has been able to visit the otherwise shut down state of Maharashtr, which has been hit hard by the pandemic.

- The death toll is six to seven times higher than reported, says doctor Vinit C Dandawate, who works at a hospital in the state.

One of the world's strictest shutdowns

The people of India have sharply criticized the government and authorities for not preparing enough for a second wave.

Many now believe that the government has instead put too much focus on upcoming election campaigns, which is also believed to have contributed to further spread of infection.

Last spring, India had one of the world's most severe shutdowns, with residents only having a couple of hours to prepare for the drastic action.

Delayed vaccination

Today, three percent of India's 1.3 billion people have received two doses of vaccine.

The goal was to vaccinate 300 million by the summer, but it will take some time.

Partly because the production of vaccines is not as fast as hoped for but also because there are too many distribution problems.

Covidoffs were dumped in the river

The country is soon approaching 300,000 reported deaths, but experts fear the real figure could be far higher.

In early May, for example, Indian media reported on how at least a hundred dead bodies had landed on the banks of the Ganges.

An Indian government letter confirmed that several of them died in covid.
