"Usually it does not cause disease in people, but is a powerful allergen, but in cases of very deep immunodeficiency, it can in isolated cases manifest itself as an opportunistic infection," the press service said.

Rospotrebnadzor said that a large concentration of mucormycosis spores in India is observed due to the high average annual temperature and huge humidity in this country.

The department also said that this fungus is common in almost all countries, it is detected under wallpaper, in corners and super-humid rooms.

At the same time, it is noted that this mycosis is potentially more relevant for the countries of Southeast Asia.

Earlier it was reported that in India there was an increase in the number of cases of mucormycosis amid the exacerbation of the situation with COVID-19.
