The statistics apply to the proportion of a municipality's passenger cars and light trucks registered as environmental vehicles at the time of purchase.

Vehicles in companies that are majority owned by a municipality are also included.

Municipal Council: "It's embarrassing"

Alongside Östersund, most of the municipalities in Jämtland County are well below the national average of 46 per cent environmental vehicles.

The lowest is Ragunda municipality, which does not actually have a single registered green car.

- It is embarrassing.

It is just to lie flat and admit that we have not done well in Ragunda municipality, says municipal councilor Mikael Westin (C).

Difficult to achieve environmental goals

Sweden's goal is for the transport sector to reduce its climate impact by 70 percent from 2010 to 2030 - a goal that Mikael Westin believes the Ragunda municipality will find difficult to achieve.

At the same time, he states that the conditions for a sparsely populated municipality like Ragunda are different than for larger municipalities.

Today, for example, there is no possibility to refuel biogas or charge an electric car in Ragunda.

- We will set up the first fast charger for electric cars in the municipality this summer, but none of the power companies that are active here have been involved and realized it.

The market does not help here in the same way as in larger cities, and it is difficult for us as a small municipality to solve everything ourselves.
