Before the Bundeswehr withdraws from Afghanistan, a large number of the local employees want protection in Germany.

According to information from the German Press Agency, more than 450 of the so-called local staff who were currently or in the past two years employed in the country have submitted a corresponding application.

That's more than 80 percent of the people in this group.

Family members usually join them.

In addition, there are around 300 applications from Afghans who were previously employed as helpers but who did not report any threat within the applicable two-year period.

They can also include employees from contract companies who were not directly employed by the Bundeswehr.

How and whether their cases should also be reassessed is a decision that has not yet been made politically.

The Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior will decide whether to join the local staff program.

The Bundeswehr is providing administrative assistance with the organization in Afghanistan.

This also includes the collection of data and biometric features.

These are required for issuing a visa or a passport substitute - a so-called travel document for foreigners.
