In Africa, African journalists suffered the full force of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020, says Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Three times more attacks and arrests were recorded by the NGO between March 15 and May 15 compared to the same period the previous year.

"Election periods and demonstrations are regularly accompanied by abuses against journalists," said RSF, and "censorship practices" are still frequently observed, in the form of Internet shutdown in certain countries.

This caricature by Brandan Reynolds for Cartooning for Peace illustrates the difficulty of exercising the press profession on the African continent.

The works of this South African cartoonist have been published daily by Business Day since 2002, as well as the weekly Weekend Argus and Rapport, the Sunday newspaper in Afrikaans.

He is the recipient of the Sikuvile Journalism Award for Editorial Cartooning, from Standard Bank of South Africa, in 2013.

Cartooning for Peace is an international network of cartoonists committed to promoting, through the universality of press cartoons, freedom of expression, human rights and mutual respect between populations of different cultures or beliefs.
