The pandemic caught fire on the second-hand market for recreational boats last year.

And the trend looks set to continue this year as well.

Statistics from the buying and selling site Blocket show that the proportion of motorboats sold within a week has increased from 44 percent in April 2020 to 71 percent during the same period this year.

At the same time, the median price has risen from SEK 54,000 last April to SEK 68,000 this year.

"Starting earlier this year"

The same applies to sailboats, where the proportion sold within a week was 57 percent in April this year, compared with 35 percent the same month last year.

The median price has also risen for sailboats, from 40,000 in 2020 to 50,000 this year, according to Blocket's compilation.

- We can see that the interest starts earlier this year this year.

We already saw last spring that many people started looking for a boat when they started planning for a holiday at home.

But this year it has increased even more.

Now we see that both prices have increased and that they are sold faster, says Matilda Adelborg, press communicator at Blocket.

Beginner-friendly boats popular

According to Matilda Adelborg, interest is still high among first-time buyers.

- We see that there is a lot of demand for beginner-friendly boats.

So one thought may be that there are very many new ones added, she says.

But there are also many pitfalls, according to Fredrik Selrot, supervisor at the Swedish Consumer Agency's information service.

He therefore advises those who are considering buying a boat to "hurry slowly".

- I would like to say that you should take it easy.

When you buy a boat, it is a big deal you make.

So I would say that you initially take it easy, hurry slowly, do good research before the purchase and also think about: What am I getting into?

Do I have a berth?

Do I have the finances to be able to have the boat?

How does it work with winter storage, repairs and storage?

There are also big differences as a consumer between buying a boat privately and from a company, he emphasizes.

- Do not buy the first best boat you like.

Take your time and check over the market that the boat you are going to buy is really the one you are going to buy.

In the clip above, Fredrik Selrot gives tips on what you as a boat buyer should think about.
