Twelve typhoons killed and hundreds injured in China

Two typhoons swept through the central city of Wuhan and a town in the eastern Jiangsu Province, killing 12 people, injuring hundreds and destroying homes and properties, the Xinhua News Agency said on Saturday.

The agency added that reports stated that eight were killed in Wuhan, Hubei Province, and 280 were injured after the typhoon swept through the Kaidian region at 8:39 pm on Friday.

The cyclone destroyed 27 homes and damaged about 130 others.

Another typhoon swept through the town of Shengze, Suzhou District, Jiangsu Province, killing four and wounding 149, Xinhua said.

Fire officials said the winds damaged electricity installations and demolished a number of factory buildings.

Typhoons often hit Jiangsu in late spring and early summer.

The China Meteorological Authority expected more severe storms to hit Shanghai and other parts of the Yangtze River Delta later today.
