Mainz (dpa) - Sports director Christian Heidel has shown himself to be extremely pleased and proud after the prevented relegation of FSV Mainz 05.

“This relegation is a joint effort by all those involved who held the entire second half of the season together,” Heidel was quoted on Saturday evening on the club's website for the 05er.

According to the results on Saturday, the Rheinhessen will remain in the league before their own game on matchday 33 of the Bundesliga against Borussia Dortmund (6 p.m. on Sunday).

That cohesion was “his wish” and “no alternative”, emphasized Heidel.

“That's exactly how it turned out, the club was quiet and the whole focus was on sport.

That was Mainz 05, is Mainz 05 and has to stay Mainz 05, ”said the official, who came back to Mainz at the beginning of 2021 together with ex-professional Bo Svensson (as coach) and ex-coach Martin Schmidt (as sports director).

"It's a historic moment that you have to enjoy and let sink in," said Heidel about the success on Saturday.
