Mönchengladbach (AP) - Marco Rose threatens a bleak farewell to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The outgoing head coach missed the badly needed victory to qualify for international business in the last home game of the season and could end up empty-handed before he said goodbye to the cup winners Borussia Dortmund.

The Gladbachers lost to the promoted VfB Stuttgart 1: 2 (1: 0), now need a win in their last Bundesliga game at Werder Bremen and have to hope for help.

With 46 points, the Borussia fell back to eighth place behind Union Berlin, which has one point more.

At Borussia-Park, Lars Stindl (45th), returning from the starting line-up, made the hosts 1-0, while Wataru Endo (73rd) and Pascal Stenzel (77th) scored for the guests.

With 45 points, Stuttgart also has a mathematical chance of participating in the Conference League.

The Gladbachers competed with their current best formation and in the new home jerseys for the coming season and tried from the start to offer a better performance than the 0: 6 in Munich a week ago.

Rose had asked his team to do the same.

With Stindl and Christoph Kramer there was more stability in the game against the strong away Swabians, in which Gregor Kobel, who was courted by some top clubs, was in goal after his back pain.

The Stuttgart had to cope with a few failures and were well occupied on the defensive, but shielded their goal well and defended compactly. Borussia's center forward Alassane Plea had two options and only hit the side netting once at the beginning and failed in the 24th minute to Kobel. In attack, VfB relied on speed and winger Erik Thommy, who got a starting opportunity for the third time this season. But the offensive efforts of the guests were limited.

In the game, which was characterized by many duels and fouls, the Gladbachers scored the opening goal shortly before half-time when Stindl scored 1-0 with a direct decrease from seven meters.

Gladbach's top scorer has already scored his 13th goal of the season.

Shortly after the break, Kobel prevented the 2-0 through Gladbach's central defender Nico Elvedi, who failed with a header.

The guests also came up with opportunities after falling behind.

Philipp Förster initially failed to keeper Yann Sommer (68th), Endo did better, who scored to equalize in the 73rd.

The now better Stuttgart team even scored a 2-1 winner four minutes later through Stenzel.

In the heated final phase, Valentino Lazaro and Plea still had good opportunities, but the Swabians saved the win and made the 600th Bundesliga defeat for the Gladbach team perfect.
