US President Joe Biden has revoked a set of controversial executive orders for his predecessor, Donald Trump, including one directing the building of a sculpture park for "American heroes", and another that sought to protect the antiquities of the Confederate era.

The White House announced this in a statement saying that "Biden used the authority vested in him to cancel the orders of former President Donald Trump, many of which were issued before and after the 2020 elections."

The first order Biden rescinded was an order signed by Trump in May 2020 that directs federal agencies to find ways to downplay Section 230, the part of Internet law that provides legal protection for social media companies.

Trump issued the directive after Twitter and Facebook began to censor some of his publications on the US presidential elections.

Biden rescinded Trump's June 2020 order, which directed the Justice Department to prioritize prosecution of those accused of vandalizing antiquities.

The order was issued in response to the demonstrators dropping statues and relics of Confederate generals and other racist figures from American history, as part of a wave of demonstrations calling for racial justice in the wake of the police killing of black citizen George Floyd in Minnesota.

Biden canceled Trump's January 18 order, which would have required the federal government to build a park housing 244 figures from history, whom the former president considered "American heroes."

• Revoked orders were issued before and after the 2020 elections.
