Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Thuringian addiction expert Sebastian Weiske has spoken out in favor of nationwide uniform upper limits for the unpunished possession of cannabis.

This would also enable criminal prosecution and prevention across national borders to be carried out uniformly, said the coordinator of the state office for addiction issues of the German press agency.

That would also bring more clarity for consumers as to when they are operating in the legal or illegal area.

In most federal states, possession of up to six grams of cannabis will not be prosecuted.

In Thuringia, ten grams has been the upper limit since 2017 - as well as in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia.

Berlin and Bremen set the highest upper limits at 10 to 15 grams.

Baden-Württemberg also wants to increase the amount for its own use without penalty to ten grams.

The Federal Drug Commissioner Daniela Ludwig then warned against an increase competition between the countries.

"From an addiction therapy point of view, I see ten grams as the upper limit critically," said Weiske.

That goes beyond recreational consumption.

Cannabis is a mind-altering drug with many negative effects such as decreased responsiveness, dizziness or depression.

For Thuringia's Minister of Health Heike Werner (left), however, the discussion about upper limits falls short.

Studies have shown that the use, demand and procurement of cannabis are not sustainably influenced by law enforcement.

It therefore reaffirmed the desire for a state-controlled supply of cannabis by certified bodies.

The legalization of the drug has been discussed in Germany for years.

The Greens, the Left Party and the FDP are in favor of a limited release of cannabis.

Since 2017, doctors have been able to prescribe medical cannabis for their patients.
