Düsseldorf / Hagen (dpa / lnw) - At a special meeting of the interior committee in the state parliament scheduled for the coming week, the case of a suspended Israel flag in Hagen is also to be examined.

The SPD parliamentary group has made a corresponding application.

The city of Hagen had announced that the flag had been brought down for de-escalation - and had followed a request by the police.

The Interior Ministry had contradicted this representation.

A ministry spokesman said on Friday evening that the city administration had made the decision to remove the flag independently.

"There was no request from the Hagen police."

However, the police had informed the city of Hagen that, according to their findings, the Israel flag was causing displeasure within the Muslim community.

In addition, she had indicated that there could therefore be an escalation if necessary.

The CDU and FDP had requested the special meeting of the interior committee, in which, among other things, the police operation near a synagogue in Gelsenkirchen should be dealt with.

There had been anti-Semitic chants from the group of around 180 demonstrators.
