London (AP) - The insolvent British department store chain Debenhams closed its last branches on Saturday after 243 years.

The long-established company, which employed 20,000 people before the start of the pandemic, had gradually lost its sales in recent years due to the changed buying habits of the British.

The corona-related temporary closure of the shops last year gave the department store the rest.

The brand name Debenhams and the online shop will continue to exist.

They went to internet fashion retailer Boohoo for £ 55 million earlier this year.

The company was founded by William Clark in 1778. He started with a small textile shop in London selling high quality fabrics, hoods, gloves and parasols.

The rise of the department store chain was initiated in 1813 by investor William Debenham, after whom the company was later named.
