Hagenow (dpa / mv) - Again, a wolf was killed in a traffic accident in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The animal was hit by a car early Thursday morning on the A24 in the direction of Hamburg near Hagenow, the police reported.

The driver was uninjured, but the wolf died at the scene of the accident.

The considerable damage to property on the vehicle was estimated at several thousand euros and had to be towed away.

It was the fifth accident involving wolves in the northeast in eight months.

In mid-April, a wolf died on the B 195 near Gallin after a collision with a car.

At the end of March, a wolf died in a game accident on the A14 near Ludwigslust after a truck hit him.

Before that, wolves were victims of collisions with vehicles in February near Malchow on the A19 and in October 2020 in a field near Ribnitz-Damgarten.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is populated with at least 15 packs of wolves, several pairs of wolves and individual wolves.

In the spring, many young animals are also in the process of breaking away from their parental packs.

The wild animals keep moving to other territories in Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony-Anhalt.
