Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology are popular: around two fifths of trainees and students in North Rhine-Westphalia are trained for a so-called MINT profession.

In the winter semester 19/20, 40 percent of the 767,617 students were enrolled in a MINT subject, the state statistics office IT.NRW announced on Friday in Düsseldorf.

The numbers for trainees were similar: in 2019, 39 percent of 299 721 trainees were in a STEM occupation.

According to the statisticians, most of the trainees in the MINT area were in the Olpe district: In 2019, around 52 percent of trainees were trained for a scientific or technical profession.

The city of Düsseldorf recorded the lowest proportion of STEM trainees in 2019 at just under 30 percent.

In general, the proportion of STEM trainees in rural areas tends to be higher than in urban regions, said the state statistics office.
