The trend of planting spruce seedlings on land that would be better suited for pine or mixed forest seems to have been broken. In the last five years, we have only seen an increase in Värmland from 15 percent to 30 percent when it comes to planting pine on the fellings, says Christian Jensen, customer manager at Swedish Forest Plants, which supplies Värmland forest owners with seedlings.
- It is increased moose grazing damage to pine, which has made forest owners plant spruce plants even when the soil is better suited for pine.
Spruce is also easier to grow, says Bengt Danielsson at the Swedish Forest Agency in Värmland.
- But the positive thing about the bark borer infestation on spruce in recent years is that we are now returning to planting the right wood species on the right soil.
