World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty was forced to retire on injury Friday in the quarter-finals of the Rome tournament, against the American Coco Gauff, just over two weeks before the Roland-Garros tournament (May 30- June 13).

The Australian, crowned at Roland Garros in 2019, led in the score in the second set (6-4, 2-1) when she brought in a member of the medical service, then left the court after greeting her opponent.

It is a right arm injury, the WTA said.
