Berlin (dpa / bb) - The bishop of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia, Christian Stäblein, has called for people to show their face against anti-Semitism.

In a digital service of the Sukkat Schalom synagogue community in Berlin on Friday evening, he expressed his solidarity with the Jewish communities in Germany.

"Anyone who attacks or insults Jews attacks us all," said Stäblein.

"You are not alone, we are and will remain by your side."

He called anti-Semitic actions in several German cities “unbearable”.

After the violent escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas, there were anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli demonstrations.

Israel flags were lit, in Gelsenkirchen 180 people marched towards the synagogue and chanted anti-Semitic slogans.

A video of this caused a storm of indignation.

Israeli flags have also been set on fire or stolen elsewhere.
