Berlin (dpa) - Green leader Annalena Baerbock has clearly condemned any anti-Semitism.

"Anti-Semitic attacks, the burning of Israeli flags, hatred and agitation against people among us, that is not part of the democratic discourse, it is an attack on human dignity, regardless of who or where it comes from," said the chancellor candidate of her party on the sidelines of a solidarity service on Friday evening in a synagogue in Berlin.

Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD), Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) and the Federal Government's Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Felix Klein, were also expected to attend the event.

Baerbock was shocked by the rocket attacks on Israel in the past few days.

"And I am equally shocked by the fact that Israel's flags are being burned in Germany and that there are attacks on synagogues."

After the violent escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas, there were anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli demonstrations in several cities in Germany.

Israel flags were lit. In Gelsenkirchen, 180 people marched from the station forecourt towards the synagogue and chanted anti-Semitic slogans.
