Potsdam (dpa / bb) - A World War II bomb weighing 250 kilograms that was discovered in downtown Potsdam is to be defused by the state's ordnance disposal service this Wednesday.

The city administration announced on Monday.

The aircraft bomb of British origin was discovered on the site of a former tram depot in Heinrich-Mann-Allee.

According to the information, a blocking circle of around 800 meters will be set up around the site.

Around 3,000 people have to leave their homes by 8 a.m.

The Brandenburg State Chancellery as well as several ministries and state offices, the Federal Police, a nursing home, a grammar school and two day-care centers are located in the restricted area. According to the city administration, a gym is available as a place to stay for those affected during the closure. The city plans to publish more information - including a map of the restricted area - on its website by Tuesday at the latest. Around 300 helpers, including the public order office, police officers and fire brigades, are on duty.

The aerial bomb has been number 205 of the World War II explosive devices that have been found in the state capital since 1990.

Air bombs from 100 kilograms are recorded statistically.

On the night of April 14, 1945 alone, the Allied flight formations dropped 1,716 tons of bombs over Potsdam.

Almost 1,600 people were killed at that time.
