Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The Cologne vaccination project in socially disadvantaged areas such as the high-rise housing estates in the Chorweiler district has been suspended for the time being.

"There are currently no urban vaccination campaigns in vulnerable social areas," said a city spokeswoman on Monday.

That will only go again when the country has provided another additional contingent of vaccine.

As requested, the city emailed the NRW Ministry of Health on Friday a report on the first vaccination campaigns.

In addition, they have asked for another vaccine.

So far, however, there has been no response.

Last week, Cologne started vaccinating with mobile teams in socially disadvantaged areas - for example in Chorweiler, but also in the Meschenich district.

The state had made 1000 additional doses of vaccine available to Cologne for this purpose.

The NRW Ministry of Health stated on request that the “further procedure with a view to district vaccinations” in North Rhine-Westphalia - based on the first experiences from Cologne - “will be fixed in the next few days”.

A decree is in progress.

In this context, the distribution of the available vaccine quantities will be communicated.

The SPD parliamentary group in the Cologne city council sharply criticized the state government.

"This is a slap in the face for the people in the Hochinziden-Veedeln," said parliamentary group leader Christian Joisten.

"The fact that the so important vaccination campaign in the disadvantaged Cologne districts now threatens to fail is due to the scandalous failure of the state government of the CDU and FDP to provide more vaccine."
