Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, ten people died of drug abuse last year.

That was five more than in 2019, according to a response from the state government to a small request from the AfD in the state parliament.

So far, no drug deaths have been reported to the police this year.

The answer did not provide any details about the victims.

The state government is not planning any measures to expand addiction counseling in the state and no increase in funding in this area.

“During the corona pandemic in particular, the consumption of alcohol and drugs increased dramatically for many people with addiction problems.

Social isolation and the loss of familiar life routines have made addiction problems worse for many, ”said the socio-political spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group, Thomas de Jesus Fernandes.

"The state government continues to turn a blind eye to the consequences of its devastating corona policy in this area," criticized the opposition politician.
