Rostock (dpa / mv) - Preparations for deepening the Rostock Sea Canal are proceeding.

As Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) announced on Monday at the National Maritime Conference in the Hanseatic city, the plan approval decision can be expected by the summer.

The approximately 16-kilometer-long sea canal, which connects the Baltic Sea with the seaport, is to be deepened to 16.5 meters.

This would allow ships with a draft of up to 15 meters to navigate the canal.

According to Scheuer, the federal government is investing around 128 million euros in the project.

As soon as the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has approved the draft and the documents have been laid out for two weeks, the planning approval decision could be issued, said the minister.

Then the Europe-wide procurement procedure will begin, so that the deepening of the sea canal would be possible as soon as the 2022 budget is available.

According to the information, three years of work can be expected.
