Laage (dpa / mv) - Rostock-Laage Airport wants to become climate-neutral according to its own information.

Regional airports should not be closed, but rather places where new technologies for a sustainable traffic turnaround would be tested, said airport managing director Dörthe Hausmann on Monday.

In order to become climate-neutral as a “Green Airport”, the airport is planning numerous measures.

A solar thermal system should cover the heating requirement, which is responsible for 70 percent of the airport's emissions.

In the future, a photovoltaic system will cover a large part of the electricity requirement and the entire fleet will be converted to electric vehicles.

Wild meadows are intended to promote biodiversity.

Hausmann did not mention a schedule.

The airport has also applied for funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport for a system that will be used to research e-kerosene.

This is synthetic kerosene that is not made from petroleum, but from carbon dioxide and water.

According to Hausmann, the plans are part of a strategy not to let small regional airports such as Laage die, even during the traffic turnaround.

New types of flying, such as drone traffic, air taxis and electric aircraft, are intended to secure their place in a climate-friendly transport concept for small airports.

From 2022, transport drones from a Bulgarian company will be stationed in Laage, it was said at the end of April.

The aircraft should be able to transport loads of 350 kilograms over a maximum of 2500 kilometers and reduce delivery times and emissions.
