Dresden (dpa / sn) - There is resistance against the construction of a new monkey house for the orangutans in the Dresden Zoo.

As the city of Dresden announced on Monday, the city council wants to decide on the monkey house this Wednesday.

E-mails against the project had been forwarded as a petition to the responsible committee of the city council, it said.

The animal rights organization Peta had appealed to the city council some time ago to prevent the new building of the "animal prison and instead to end the painful orangutan keeping".

With 17 million euros, the orangutan house is set to be the largest construction project in the history of the Dresden zoo. Due to the current financial situation, one does not expect an urban investment grant. Therefore, a loan of 12 million euros is to be taken out. The remaining amount is to be financed from own funds and donations. The start of construction is planned for the summer. Breeding orangutans has a long tradition in Dresden.

On Sunday the Pirate Party mobilized against the project.

"The problem: The zoo cannot repay this loan on its own," explained the Pirate Party.

“Spending 17 million on the further imprisonment of great apes is absurd in itself.

But then to immediately oblige the city council to pay off the loan itself for the next 10 to 15 years is a massive budget advance and a nasty sleight of hand, ”said pirate city councilor Martin Schulte-Wissermann.

His party wants to move the city council to end the keeping of great apes.
