Nuremberg (AP) - The two-time Stanley Cup winner Tom Kühnhackl will take part in the ice hockey world championship in Riga.

The striker will be the first North American professional to be selected for the final preparatory phase starting on Tuesday, announced the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB).

This means that the 29-year-old from the AHL team Bridgeport can fly to Latvia together with the national team on Saturday and would be ready for action from the first World Cup game.

Overall, national coach Toni Söderholm has brought eight new players into his provisional World Cup squad.

From the German champions Eisbären Berlin, goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger, defender Jonas Müller, Marcel Noebels, Lukas Reichel and Leonhard Pföderl are new to the squad.

Defenders Dominik Bittner and Janik Möser from the finalists Wolfsburg are there.
